The New Forest Art Scene

Two Local Galleries Join Forces

Palais Des Vaches

Nick and Caroline de Rothschild of the PALAIS DES VACHES GALLERY & VENUE are thrilled to announce a joint venture with Stewart Mechem and Bev Saunders of Lymington’s COASTAL GALLERY to show off an extravaganza of art.

The Palais has joined forces with Coastal Gallery to showcase some of Hampshire's finest artists, sculptors and ceramicists at their newly refurbished old farm buildings that are now transformed into a major new art centre on the southern edge of the New Forest at Lower Exbury.

Nick de Rothschild, President of the famous Exbury Gardens, & his artist wife, Caroline, spent lockdown turning derelict Lower Exbury farm buildings into a stunning new ‘put the art into party’ venue. They started with the magnificent ‘Cow Palace’, as the workers in the erstwhile milking parlour once called it, that was built by Nick’s grandfather one hundred years ago. Along with the adjoining buildings and courtyard, a team of local builders, artisans and craftspeople lovingly restored them to ‘more than its former glory’ creating a space large enough to host up to 200 guests.

Its location is far from the hustle and bustle of a city or town – a place with no parking problems and lots of fresh air. In fact, it is uniquely rural and perfectly private, down the end of a long gravel track, surrounded by meadows that, in summer, are filled with butterflies.

“First and foremost, we are an art gallery, and we are immensely proud of our achievement; but it is also designed as a venue that gives great party!” says Caroline. “Over the years we have long respected the Coastal Gallery in Lymington – so why not join forces with Stewart & Bev. We have great artists, they have great artists, and ours is the best place to showcase both their works."

Palais des Vaches Gallery is showcasing work by Caroline and several other talented Hampshire artists including Stewart Beckett, William Pounds, John Illsley, Gina Dearden, Paula Mitchell, Paula Norris, Kim Thompson and their resident sculptor, Long Ly.

Coastal Gallery’s exciting artists exhibiting include Julie Collins, Jane Emberson, Stephen Powell, Chris Whittaker; sculptor Andy Baerselman and ceramicist Jackie Giron, and also featuring several guest artists from London including Gohar Goddard, Biddy Hodgkinson and sculptor, Ingrid Sterling.

Nick adds, " Our aim is simple: to establish The Palais des Vaches as the foremost gallery and event space in Hampshire. We look forward to developing the quality and range of our artists with Stewart & Bev.”

The venue has a fully equipped kitchen, designed for caterers, which can present the highest standards of delicious food and top-class service. These catering partners include Red Herring, Ritual Feast, Lemon Stone Events and The Nags Bar & Kitchen - A winning combination of Hampshire's finest food providers!"

"What Nick and Caroline have created here is an artist's and designer's dream,” Coastal Gallery co-partner, Bev Saunders, observes: “It is an extraordinarily beautiful rural location with views across to the Isle of Wight in which to showcase our fine selection of contemporary artworks, particularly larger pieces. This is the perfect extension to our Lymington-based gallery."

Her co-partner, Stewart Mechem adds: "Collaboration between galleries has been developing over the past few years, and this is our great opportunity to present a diverse range of artists, ceramicists and sculptors to a wider audience within an amazing setting. This area of Hampshire has an abundance of exceptional talent, and it is exciting to see local businesses coming together in support of such talent. "
